Cooling Down with Crochet

As a creative person with many, many hobbies, I find the need to find new challenges and oftentimes, that means putting aside big lofty projects to pick up new ones. In this case, I've decided to put to rest my 2010 Daily Drawings, which I've been sadly been playing catch up since June. This allows for more time to concentrate on my weekly painting, doodling and drawing for The Sketchbook Project 2011, and working on my crochet hexagon blanket which I put down at the end of last winter.

The weather has changed quickly from summer to autumn practically overnight. To me, this means cozy sweatshirt and warm blanket weather. This also puts me in the mood for more textile and fiber arts and crafts. Last year, in September 2009, I started this project to give me something to concentrate on outside of work as I lived out of a suitcase at my boyfriend's parents' house while the rest of my belongings were stashed away in storage during the long process of house hunting.

I found that crochet was very therapeutic, eased my nervous energy, and encouraged me to take some time away from the computer. It was also something that I could later on display and share with others.  I thank my mom for having the patience to teach me how to crochet when I was 16.  Since I've learned crochet, I have never been able get this far into a big crochet project until this one.  Owning the project, from designing the color combinations in Illustrator, researching different hexagon patterns, and finally rewriting the pattern in my own writing in my journal has helped with this.  Although I've put it away for a few months, I can see this project reaching completion after a few winters.
