What's the Matter, Chicken?

This is my first time to participate in Illustration Friday, the theme being "Chicken". I started it yesterday and put some finishing touches on it today. It's also the 2nd to last page for my Sketchbook Project entry. I've come a long way as far as my style while doing this project as you can see from the contrast of my last entry's images to this one.

The weeks following the holidays, I've entered somewhat of a deep seclusion as I plowed through the sketchbook pages. For the past few weeks, I've been painting, doodling, and sketching every day within the first few hours of waking up and I've also been thinking what 2011 had in store for me as far as creative challenges and how I plan to promote my art and my business. I've allowed myself to enjoy the post holiday lull in my business but it's time to get out of that lull and start focusing on pushing forward again.

Last year's challenge was to draw daily. While my daily drawings haven't been in the form of daily uploads since mid 2010, drawing daily has become part of my daily routine and now comes to me rather naturally. Just last year, I've evolved my art from random sketchbook doodles to fully developed illustrations and paintings leading to having my work displayed at a local coffee shop, selling at a local gallery, having my own art booth in an open air market, and creating client commissioned illustrations, along with custom logos and marketing collateral for local businesses. I was able to overcome my fear of sharing my art with the world and it only led me to greater things I couldn't even imagine if I hadn't tried. Although it didn't seem like 2010 was that busy for me, looking back, I believe I accomplished what we call around here "a metric butt ton".

Since this week's Illustration Friday topic is "Chicken", I thought I'd touch upon that. What are your fears? What have you been afraid to try, and why? I challenge you to write them down, or I dare you to tell me by commenting below. Resolutions are for breaking. Challenges are for overcoming. See if you can take at least one of your fears this year and challenge yourself to do something about it, but don't just do it by yourself in your own little bubble. Share it, proclaim it to the world, and commit to it. You'll see better results thereafter. I promise you. Good luck!

I fear *nothing* ;P But I'm with you: resolutions are for sissies. Let's forget about all the ways we think we're broken and get busy actually creating the things we want this year. I think the fear of making a start is really the only fear; get past that, and in the thrill of doing, momentum takes care of itself. :)

I agree, Jamie. Starting out is really the hardest part for me but once I get going, it's such a thrill :)

Michelle, thank you! The Sketchbook Project really helped in exploring my current style in different mediums. Looking forward to a great year!

Hey May! Great post... and wow... your first IF Congrats! You started off with a bang! Nice work! Love that expression! Congrats on the Sketchbook project too. I really had to push myself to finish. The holidays messed up my routine. I have a fear of success. I’m always sabotaging myself.

Just wanted to comment as I found this post to be inspiring... I'm challenging myself to "take on harder projects," if that makes sense. The simple stuff isn't as satisfying. We'll see what happens. Congrats on 2010 and good luck in 2011! I've enjoyed reading your blog, I'll be back!
